Indulge in chocolate this New Year!

3 Jan

I came across an amazing recipe for a chocolate face mask that I might start incorporating into my routine at the spa. I have to say I tried it out on my skin, and not only did it work – it tasted great!

Technically, you are not supposed to eat it, but if a little bit did accidentally happen to get in your mouth, or your clients mouth – it is completely safe!

This mask is stimulating to the skin, hydrating and also opens up the pores. It is rejuvenating and safe to eat as I mentioned earlier.

For the recipe –

2 tablespoons cocoa powder (think raw, organic, pure)

2 tablespoons plain yogurt

1 teaspoon of honey

Make a paste of all of the ingredients and spread it on the face after a thorough cleansing. Avoid the eye area. After 10 minutes, remove with a warm, damp towel.

Then savor the amazing results – which are completely guilt free. A great way to indulge your sweet tooth and enhance your home skin care routine.

Some winter love for dry eyes and puffiness with a homemade eye treatment!

14 Nov

Winter always brings out seasonal allergies and overly dry skin in some of my clients. In addition, we all tend to overindulge in all that the holidays has to offer. Between the sweets, food, stress and alcohol consumption during holiday parties it’s no wonder we all look a little ragged. If you are looking for a quick, easy and inexpensive way to relax, ease those itchy allergy eyes and puffy circles look no further. Using some cucumber slices and lavender essential oil, this is probably the easiest and most effective of the treatments I have offered.

Cucumber and Lavender Eye Treatment
1/4 freshly cut cucumber, chilled
1 drop Doterra Lavender essential oil

lavender_15ml4

Slice the cucumber thinly, and place it in a small bowl of fresh spring water. Place in the refrigerator for at least ten minutes. You can add ice cubes to chill it faster if you desire. Add a drop of Lavender essential oil and let the bowl sit on the counter a few minutes until the scent is infused into the mixture. Place the slices on the closed eyelids to reduce puffiness or to relieve eyes that are red and itchy from seasonal allergies for approximately five to ten minutes or until the cucumbers are no longer cold.

To make this experience more “spa like” – put on some relaxing music. Maybe something along the lines of Carla Bruni’s “Le Ciel dans une chambre,” “Yellow” by Jem, or “Duet” from Rachel Yamagata. Timing wise, you could probably listen to all three and be transported into a state of beauty bliss.

I hope this amazing little tip helps you through this rough skin patch, also known as winter time.

Help keep that winter skin glowing with some all natural skincare routines!

23 Oct

During the winter time, not only does the weather dry out your skin but the chaos of what’s supposed to be the happiest time of the year stresses you. In turn, this dehydration and stress leads to premature aging. Yuck. No one wants that.

So, here are a few tried and true skincare treatments that can do at home to liven up your skin, help you relax and keep looking your age (or hopefully even younger!)

Honey is a natural humectant, and it’s so great for both your hair and skin. If you select this option, make sure to always use raw or organic honey. No need to add any additional contaminants into the mix.

A simple honey hydration mask can make all the difference.
For this recipe – it’s easy.
1 soup spoon of honey (raw/organic)

Cleanse your face first, and then dampen a face towel with warm water. Heat it up in the microwave, or put it in a bowl of hot water to make it very warm. Let the towel cover the entire face for 3 minutes while you relax. Remove the towel and apply the honey mixture to the skin with a gentle spatula. Leave on for 10 minutes and then remove it with another warm towels. Apply a light moisturizer and voila! Smooth, glowing, hydrated skin.

For an amazing hair remedy (dry scalp, dry hair, lack of lustre) follow this trick:

3/4 cup aloe vera skin grade gel (I like Aloe Life’s brand – pictured) which you can get at Sprouts or online.

2 tablespoons raw or organic (or both) honey
2 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops lemon essential oil
OR: emit the essential oils

Mix together then add to dry hair at the scalp and rub into scalp. Work through the rest of your hair, and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse well no need to shampoo it out or add any additional conditioner. Your hair and scalp should feel clean, shiny and flake free.

Hope you like these, and if you try them out make sure to let me know what you think!
Stay Beautiful!

Product Review on Zim’s Crack Cream and Max Freeze

10 Jun

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing two wonderful new products at the spa. The first one, MAX Freeze, is a topical spray that works very similarly to bio freeze. I love the way it smells, and the natural ingredients – plus it actually works. Maybe not long-term, but as it states it is only for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains, and joint pain. My left hip always seems to give me issues and so I had decided to spray some on there after I did a particularly hard workout. I wasn’t stiff or achy like I normally was. MAX Freeze is available at multiple drugstores nationwide like Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, and many more.

Ingredients:
Contains 4% menthol – Pain Reliever
Contains .2% camphor – Pain Reliever
Organic Ilex, Organic Aloe, Organic Arnica, Vitamin E, & Tea Tree Oil

MAX Freeze

The Second item I am particular exited to share my review about. I LOVE products with Arnica in them, and have seen huge results with these products whenever I have used them on myself. I especially love the smell, and texture of this particular product. I was a bit skeptical that the product would work any better than other products I have tried, but fortunately I had an issue pop up that was the perfect trial for this cream.

Zim's Advanced Crack Cream

Zim’s Advanced Crack Cream

I recently had a gnarly rash underneath my armpit. The rash was eczema like, and could have been a heat rash or a reaction to my new deodorant. (I know, tmi.) Either way, it was itchy, uncomfortable and left me unable to wear anything on the skin without mild burning. Enter Zim’s Crack Cream. I placed it on the area 2 times a day for two days.

This is what it looked like in the beginning:

Day 1 and having some issues

Day 1 and having some issues

As you can clearly see, I was having some issues. And under both arms, but more so on one side than the other.

After two days, this was the outcome.

After 2 days, and rash free

After 2 days, and rash free

Back to normal again! I also tried Zim’s Crack Cream on my feet since I like to wear sandals a lot in the summer time and they can get a little roughed up from this San Diego sand.

I would definitely give this product 5 stars and my recommendation.

New Infused water flavor – Watermelon Cilantro

21 May

watermelon

This week at the spa I introduced watermelon and cilantro infused water. I have to say that I think it scared a few of my clients off, but the ones who did try it loved it. The sweetness of the watermelon mixes well with the herbal flavor of the cilantro. Plus, there are so many amazing health benefits to this drink.

Cilantro is known for its ability to detox the body from harmful metals. In addition, it can help to alleviate symptoms of diabetes, anxiety, lower blood sugar and prevent cardiovascular damage. Watermelon is a natural source of antioxidants, increases the amount of blood flow throughout the body, which helps with circulation. The inside of a watermelon is approximately 92% water and has the highest amount of lycopene. It is especially good for men and helps with prostate help, lowers blood pressure and aids erectile dysfunction which helps the ladies out as well (haha).

To make this yummy mixture you will need

1 gallon of water

approx 4 cups cubed watermelon

5 sprigs of cilantro

Put it in the pitcher, place in the fridge at night and enjoy some amazingly refreshing, tasty healthy water the next day!

Stay hydrated!

Collagen and Vitamin Supplements for the skin

7 May

I am typically asked about collagen supplements, or which vitamins are essential for the skin. This is a tough one for me because I strongly believe that you can’t really “fix” something with just a pill. I think that in addition to taking a supplement, your overall diet needs to be just as beneficial and you should be drinking enough water. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter how expensive your creams, or supplements are – you won’t see that much of a change. So, what are some of the more common supplements that I have head clients asking about?

Primarily collagen, vitamin C, and Hyaluronic acid supplements.

But, what is collagen?

Collagen is an essential protein that is derived from animals (usually bovine skin) or can also be from shellfish. It is essential for the formation of pretty and supple skin and other tissues in your body. As we age, we see a decline in the collagen production of our skin which leads to loss of fullness, and loss of elasticity. To help boost collagen, you can supplement your already nutritious diet with pills, liquid, or chew forms of the nutrient. It is also great for your hair, nails and bones.

Some of the collagens pair up with other nutrients known to be beneficial for the skin. Some of the items they are paired with are usually vitamin C, or hyaluronic acid. vitamin C is essential to boosting collagen in the skin and can often lead to that “glow” of the skin that most women feel they lose. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body and is a moisturizing agent.

So, how much collagen should I be taking?

First, and foremost you should NEVER start taking a collagen supplement without speaking with your primary doctor if you are currently on any medications to make sure there will be no reactions. In addition, if you are pregnant or nursing you may also need to speak with your doctor. As a general rule, 2000 -6000 mg of collagen per day is ideal.

Do you have any brands that you recommend?

I have been taking supplements from a company called Neocell for about two months now. I started off on a product of theirs called “Beauty Chews” that combine collagen, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid into a small, fruit punch flavored chew. I noticed a good change in my skin about three weeks in, and they were very easy to take. I also did my research on several collagen supplements online before purchasing, and found these had decent reviews. What sold me on this particular brand was that I got to speak with the rep from the company at an event at Sprouts and ask a zillion questions. They were very up front, honest and recommend what they thought would be best for me. They were right.

In doing more research on the company I found they also have a liquid form (not so great) and a pill form that has collagen types 1 and 3 in them. These pills were very highly rated online, and I was able to purchase them as well. Since I have started on the pills (3 in the am on an empty stomach, 3 in pm same thing) I have noticed a larger change in my skin. My cheek area is fuller then it used to be, my skin feels more supple and looks smooth, and my dark circles that I ALWAYS have even on 8+ hours of sleep are disappearing. I am definitely happy with the results, and I am typically a very picky consumer.

To find Neocell, you can visit them directly on their website.

Please let me know what you think of the products. I am always interested to hear other results (good and bad) – but just make sure that you give yourself a solid month of using them before you decide if you love it or want to leave it.

Stay beautiful!

A miracle drink? Maybe not, but definitely turns back the clock and aids digestion!

I started juicing a few years back, and I still juice on a regular basis. I began that journey by incorporating a green smoothie into my routine each day. Not only is this drink packed full of your daily intake of greens, but potassium, multiple vitamins and gives your. Natural boost of energy. When I wanted to wean myself off of soda and coffee this drink, plus green tea was a life saver.

I started off in the morning by waking up and drinking a cup of warm water, with 1/2 a lemon in it. Then I would take a probiotic. About a half hour later I would drink my green smoothie. It was hard to give up breakfast completely at first and substitute with this, so I would also have one or two pieces of gluten free toast with an avocado spread on it, or some oatmeal with flax or hemp sedans sprinkled on it. After a few days this because my breakfast and then I was able to give up caffeine and stick to my healthy snack about an hour or so later.

So what’s in this drink that will give you more energy, help clear your skin, and give you nutrients you are lacking?

For a single serving you will need:

2 cups raw spinach
image

1 cup chopped romaine lettuce
image

1 half of a banana, one whole pear, three small celery stalks and half of a lemon squeezed into it.
image

Place the greens and one cup filtered water in the blender first and lightly blend for 30 seconds until loosely chopped. Then add the pear, banana, and lemon as those don’t need to blend as long.
image

Once blended, it may still be a little thick and chunky. I use my Ninja and it does leave it lumpy, and not like a juice at all. But this also makes it more filling. Always start here so that you gain your full nutrients before switching to juicing.

You can double the amount to make two batches and then store in mason jars in the fridge. This will keep for two days if cold. Avoid storing in anything but glass, and keep the lid tightly closed. You can also make large amount and freeze it. I am up to two drinks per day, one in the am and one for my afternoon snack. Always drink it before you are going to have carbs and/or meat.

You can also adjust the recipe as needed to make it a little sweeter by tossing an apple in 🙂

Hope you enjoy it !! Please let me know your thoughts!!
