Meet your meat

Every once in a while I get a request for a blog post that asks me to showcase a recipe that is great for your skin. This isn’t one of them. However, this post is one I have been wanting to do for a while because this food is not only is it great for your overall health, but your skin, and hair as well.

featureGrass fed beef. Now, I realize there are a lot of plant based readers out there who will not agree with this post, and that’s okay. I’m not suggesting that anyone change their diet completely based on this post, rather I am suggesting that if you are going to eat meat, that you at least make better choices.

So, why is grass fed beef so much better than regular beef? Well, for starters, watch any of the documentaries out there that show how the traditional beef industry works and what the cattle are fed. The industry thrives on feeding beef corn, but so much of todays corn and feed is genetically modified. In addition to GMO’s  traditional beef can be packed full of antibiotics, chemicals and hormones.

There are so many articles, studies, documentaries, etc that make it complicated when it comes to dietary guidelines. Let me just break down the basics here for you and keep it simple:

  • Grass fed beef has 80% less fat than grain fed beef and 30% less cholesterol. Imagine being able to keep the protein intake up, but the fat content down.
  • It has balanced Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega acids aid in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory disease and autoimmune disorders.
  • It is a great source of conjugated linoleic acid. 3 times the amount in traditional beef. What is this? It’s an acid that reduces the risk of cancer, obesity, and a number of immune disorders.
  • It is full of beta carotene. This helps with vision, immune disorders, and osteoarthritis.
  • It contains 400% more Vitamins A and E which helps your vision, and stimulates white blood cells.
  • Grass fed beef also creates happier animals, supports sustainable farming practices and local farms.

Due to the high demand of healthier foods, there has thankfully been a rise in the amount of grass fed beef now carried at local stores. What used to only be available a Farmers markets or local meat shops is now available at chain grocery stores. Sure, the cost of the meat is a little more expensive, but it’s a step toward being healthier. Spending a little more time and money on your health now as a preventative measure sure beats forking over a ton of money for health issues later. Some of those issues can definitely be chalked up to hereditary factors, but with the rise of so many unexplained diseases that aren’t passed down, it may  be better to just help the odds of being healthier, longer by eating as clean as you can.

Indulge in chocolate this New Year!

I came across an amazing recipe for a chocolate face mask that I might start incorporating into my routine at the spa. I have to say I tried it out on my skin, and not only did it work – it tasted great!

Technically, you are not supposed to eat it, but if a little bit did accidentally happen to get in your mouth, or your clients mouth – it is completely safe!

This mask is stimulating to the skin, hydrating and also opens up the pores. It is rejuvenating and safe to eat as I mentioned earlier.

For the recipe –

2 tablespoons cocoa powder (think raw, organic, pure)

2 tablespoons plain yogurt

1 teaspoon of honey

Make a paste of all of the ingredients and spread it on the face after a thorough cleansing. Avoid the eye area. After 10 minutes, remove with a warm, damp towel.

Then savor the amazing results – which are completely guilt free. A great way to indulge your sweet tooth and enhance your home skin care routine.

Some winter love for dry eyes and puffiness with a homemade eye treatment!

Winter always brings out seasonal allergies and overly dry skin in some of my clients. In addition, we all tend to overindulge in all that the holidays has to offer. Between the sweets, food, stress and alcohol consumption during holiday parties it’s no wonder we all look a little ragged. If you are looking for a quick, easy and inexpensive way to relax, ease those itchy allergy eyes and puffy circles look no further. Using some cucumber slices and lavender essential oil, this is probably the easiest and most effective of the treatments I have offered.

Cucumber and Lavender Eye Treatment
1/4 freshly cut cucumber, chilled
1 drop Doterra Lavender essential oil

Slice the cucumber thinly, and place it in a small bowl of fresh spring water. Place in the refrigerator for at least ten minutes. You can add ice cubes to chill it faster if you desire. Add a drop of Lavender essential oil and let the bowl sit on the counter a few minutes until the scent is infused into the mixture. Place the slices on the closed eyelids to reduce puffiness or to relieve eyes that are red and itchy from seasonal allergies for approximately five to ten minutes or until the cucumbers are no longer cold.

To make this experience more “spa like” – put on some relaxing music. Maybe something along the lines of Carla Bruni’s “Le Ciel dans une chambre,” “Yellow” by Jem, or “Duet” from Rachel Yamagata. Timing wise, you could probably listen to all three and be transported into a state of beauty bliss.

I hope this amazing little tip helps you through this rough skin patch, also known as winter time.

Help keep that winter skin glowing with some all natural skincare routines!

During the winter time, not only does the weather dry out your skin but the chaos of what’s supposed to be the happiest time of the year stresses you. In turn, this dehydration and stress leads to premature aging. Yuck. No one wants that.

So, here are a few tried and true skincare treatments that can do at home to liven up your skin, help you relax and keep looking your age (or hopefully even younger!)

Honey is a natural humectant, and it’s so great for both your hair and skin. If you select this option, make sure to always use raw or organic honey. No need to add any additional contaminants into the mix.

A simple honey hydration mask can make all the difference.
For this recipe – it’s easy.
1 soup spoon of honey (raw/organic)

Cleanse your face first, and then dampen a face towel with warm water. Heat it up in the microwave, or put it in a bowl of hot water to make it very warm. Let the towel cover the entire face for 3 minutes while you relax. Remove the towel and apply the honey mixture to the skin with a gentle spatula. Leave on for 10 minutes and then remove it with another warm towels. Apply a light moisturizer and voila! Smooth, glowing, hydrated skin.

For an amazing hair remedy (dry scalp, dry hair, lack of lustre) follow this trick:

3/4 cup aloe vera skin grade gel (I like Aloe Life’s brand – pictured) which you can get at Sprouts or online.


2 tablespoons raw or organic (or both) honey
2 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops lemon essential oil
OR: emit the essential oils

Mix together then add to dry hair at the scalp and rub into scalp. Work through the rest of your hair, and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse well no need to shampoo it out or add any additional conditioner. Your hair and scalp should feel clean, shiny and flake free.

New Infused water flavor – Watermelon Cilantro

This week at the spa I introduced watermelon and cilantro infused water. I have to say that I think it scared a few of my clients off, but the ones who did try it loved it. The sweetness of the watermelon mixes well with the herbal flavor of the cilantro. Plus, there are so many amazing health benefits to this drink.

Cilantro is known for its ability to detox the body from harmful metals. In addition, it can help to alleviate symptoms of diabetes, anxiety, lower blood sugar and prevent cardiovascular damage. Watermelon is a natural source of antioxidants, increases the amount of blood flow throughout the body, which helps with circulation. The inside of a watermelon is approximately 92% water and has the highest amount of lycopene. It is especially good for men and helps with prostate help, lowers blood pressure and aids erectile dysfunction which helps the ladies out as well (haha).

To make this yummy mixture you will need

1 gallon of water

approx 4 cups cubed watermelon

5 sprigs of cilantro

Put it in the pitcher, place in the fridge at night and enjoy some amazingly refreshing, tasty healthy water the next day!

Spice it up with Cucumber, mint and jalapeño infused water!

Hot weather always makes me think about margaritas, and sitting on a beach somewhere melting my troubles away. But, let’s face it. Most of us don’t have the extra time or money to travel every time the temperatures rise. Thankfully, I live in San Diego so I can retreat to the water when I’m not working. I wanted to create an infused water that gave me that tropical, exotic retreat feel without even having to leave my work.

Mint is always a great herb to give a different flavor to your water. Paired with cucumber, you can’t go wrong. But what could make it a bit more interesting? Jalapeño. Yep, you heard it right. This exotic mix is reminiscent of a mojito I had in Hawaii last night. It’s got just a little kick to it without really even tasting the pepper.

For the recipe:

1 gallon water
1/2 of a jalapeño (de-seeded, and completely cleaned out)
1 whole cucumber (or a little less if you want more of a spicy taste to it)
2-3 springs of mint

The flavor on this one kicks up quickly so you could safely make it in the morning to drink all day.

Homemade dry shampoo

Do you ever feel like you have those days where you don’t want to wash your hair, but you have a little too much oil at the scalp? Or maybe, you have really fine hair and just need a little more volume?

Enter dry shampoo.

A dry shampoo is typically a powder, or sometimes a spray, that will basically absorb some of the oil and act like a temporary “shampoo” for your hair. The problem is that some leaves residue in your hair, all of them have chemicals, and for a good one they aren’t exactly cheap.

Enter your kitchen products.

By using just one, or maybe two products you probably have in your kitchen, you can make your very own dry shampoo that’s healthy, works, smells great and is a fraction of the cost.

Cornstarch (not cornmeal) can be used on lighter hair colors by placing a small amount in your palm and applying into the roots. I used to have an issue with cornstarch because I have dark hair, and then I would be able to see it. Image

If you have dark hair, use an equal combination of cornstarch and cocoa powder. The cocoa powder makes it smell amazing, and the white, ashy look of the cornstarch is not visible at all.
